In February 2014 my boyfriend shared a Facebook post about a girl who never shampooed her hair. At first, I didn’t really believe it because her hair looked so healthy and clean in the picture, but I read the article and found out she used baking soda and water. It sounded interesting and reasonable so I decided to give it a try. This was a big shift for me because at that time I was shampooing my hair sometimes up to twice/day.


I researched cleaning your hair with baking soda and realized how popular it is around the world, it’s actually called the “no poo” method. I knew I had to give it a try.

On the first day I cleaned my hair with baking soda and noticed that it didn’t get greasy for about 4 days. I decided to keep it up and then I noticed my scalp developed dandruff. I did more research and went with the recommendation of using less baking soda and it worked within a couple of washes. Any other problem I occurred (like my hair feeling a little dry), I would just research it and find a natural solution.

My hair was the healthiest it ever was! Shiny, strong, clean and it felt lighter because there was no coating on it (which your typical shampoos do).

As I was researching solutions I began to learn more and more about the cosmetic industry and how dangerous the ingredients were in everyday products that women around the world were using.

It was very overwhelming at first trying to find something that didn’t have these harmful chemicals in them. All the major brand products would be marketed as healthy and natural but as soon as I researched their ingredients there were red chemical flags popping up.

So I started researching how to buy clean products and most of them came from the US (I’m Canadian). That’s when I thought, perhaps I should try to make these myself.

Again, I began the research. I made a bunch of concoctions and tested them. Some were good and some not so much. I had eye shadow and moisturizer that I learned how to make really well. I received feedback from my friends and family about what they didn’t like and made some changes and the rest as they say is history.

I’m so passionate about selling these products because you can’t trust most of the big cosmetics companies to give you something that is safe. I wanted to provide a solution to women where they can be 100% certain that they are receiving safe products for their skin and health. I thoroughly research every ingredient that goes into my products and if they aren’t fully safe then I do not use them.

Today, I’m so happy to announce that Ola Organics* cosmetics are now in the home well over 500 women who put their trust in me (and it’s growing everyday).

*What’s in a name?

I wanted to use a name that had something to do with the products. I did some research around the product names and different languages. While I am originally from Halifax, NS, my company was started in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Newfoundland culture is highly influenced by their Irish decent and then I saw that Oil in the Irish language is Ola. When I added Organics to it, I loved the name and that it had a shout out to the place where I started my dream of helping get safe make up in the hands of women.
